Wix to Squarespace: Why Switching is Worth Your Time
Thank goodness website builders have come so far. What used to require HTML or CSS knowledge can now be done with a few clicks and drag-and-drops. However, because this method of website building has become so popular, the number of host websites to choose from has increased ten-fold.
How do you possibly choose?
Founded in 2006, Wix has become a popular choice. It definitely has its strengths! However, there is one hosting service that we think surpasses all the rest. Squarespace.
There are many reasons why we think you should switch your website from Wix (or whatever website builder you’re using) to Squarespace. Founded in 2003, it was one of the premiere website builders of its kind, and it shows.
Wix has over five hundred templates. It’s easy to let the sheer number of options draw you to Wix; however, quantity is not always better. Squarespace may only have forty templates, but every single one of them is gorgeous. Each one is made by a professional designer. Having this well-curated selection of templates also takes away some of the anxiety that comes with trying to select which one is best.
Not only that, but Squarespace allows you to change your template at any time without losing any of your content. With Wix, once you pick a template, you’re stuck. You’d have to redo your entire website if you wanted to change your template.
Everyone surfs the web on their phone these days. If you’re a business owner or blogger, it’s important to have a mobile-friendly site. While Wix does provide a mobile editor, it does not provide mobile-responsive templates. Squarespace automatically optimizes your site for mobile devices.
Squarespace also provides—on most templates—the ability to completely customize your mobile designs to optimize the "look" even further.
Wix provides over-the-phone and email support from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. While they certainly have quality customer support, they don’t have a live chat option. Squarespace has a live chat from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST and their email support is 24/7. Not to mention they’ve won many awards for their customer service.
Perhaps one of the most useful Squarespace features for business owners and professional bloggers is the built-in SEO. This includes an “automatically generated built-in sitemap that helps Google crawl, understand, and ultimately, rank a website.” It also includes built in header tags that help Google to understand what is on your page.
Squarespace also significantly reduces the dip on search rankings when switching your website from another hosting service. And importing content from another website is a one-step process. So easy!
Squarespace integrates with Google Analytics, TypeKit, MailChimp, Acuity, and more! It’s easy to connect these and your social media accounts. With Wix (and WordPress), you need to add third-party widgets for quite a few of these programs, which can be confusing, inconvenient and unreliable.
Earlier, we said the beauty of Squarespace lies in the beautiful, curated collection of templates. You might be worried that your website might look like just a template because so many people use the same templates.
However, not only does each template allow an incredible amount of customization options, they also have the option for complete CSS customization—something we offer our clients. Whether you want to change a few little things or the entire site, CSS will allow your professional web designer to do so.
Wix and other web-hosting programs definitely have their strengths. Website builders have come a long way! But with all these advantages, we find that Squarespace takes the cake.
